In Battle of the Game Consoles, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox Widen
Leads Over Sony's PlayStation

TOKYO -- For most of this year, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame
console seemed finally to be taking off after a slow start. The PS3,
trailing Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles,
was closing in on the No. 2 Xbox 360, with new games and quarterly
sales growth at twice the speed of last year.

But early results from this holiday season aren't promising. U.S.
sales of the PS3 fell 19% last month from a year earlier, while sales
doubled for the Wii console and rose 8% for the Xbox 360, according to
research firm NPD. Analysts say they expect PS3 sales for this month
to be flat or lower than last year, while sales for its rivals are
likely to rise. And Sony may not reach its goal of selling 10 million
PS3 consoles in the fiscal year through March, analysts say.

The sales decline is a heavy blow to Sony, which was banking on the
videogame division to provide a bright spot as its core electronics
business is hit by the global economic downturn. Sony in May forecast
that its games division would turn a profit this fiscal year after two
years of losses since launching the PS3 in 2006. Meanwhile, poor sales
of television sets and digital cameras are forcing the company to lay
off thousands of staff and close factories.

Sony's strategy of selling a pricey game machine with advanced
features and cutting-edge components appears to be backfiring as a
deepening recession has U.S. consumers more price sensitive than ever.

If Sony doesn't close the gap with its rivals, it could risk making
the PS3 an afterthought to game publishers, who focus most of their
resources on the machines with the most users. At the end of
September, the Wii had a wide lead with nearly 35 million units sold
since its launch in 2006 compared with about 22 million Xbox 360
consoles and 17 million PS3 machines. Nintendo last month sold 2
million Wii machines in the U.S., while Microsoft sold 836,000 Xbox
360s and Sony sold 378,000 PS3s, according to NPD.

Sony said earlier this month that it was happy with the "strong
momentum" of the PS3 and focused on the machine's 60% rise in the year-
to-date sales. A spokesman at Sony's game division declined to comment
further, saying it is working hard to close the quarter strong.

A key factor behind the decline in sales may be the PS3's high price.
At $399, the entry-level PS3 model costs at least $150 more than the
Wii or the least expensive Xbox 360. Sony emphasizes that the PS3
comes with a Blu-ray high-definition video player and an 80-gigabyte
hard drive, features not available with the Wii or Xbox 360.

Microsoft cut Xbox 360 prices in early September and started bundling
games with the most basic console for $199. Nintendo has maintained
the Wii's initial $249 price, but sales are rising now that it has
overcome an early supply shortage.

Part of Sony's strategy hinged on selling the PS3 as a relatively
inexpensive Blu-ray player. But prices of Blu-ray players have fallen
so sharply recently -- new players are available for less than $200 --
that it's possible to buy a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less
than a PS3. Meanwhile, the economic downturn has cooled sales of flat-
screen TV sets and Blu-ray players this holiday season.

Industry watchers say they were surprised Sony didn't cut PS3 prices
to boost sales before the holidays. One reason may be Sony Chief
Executive Howard Stringer's commitment to making the games division
profitable after heavy investment in the PS3 machine. Console makers
hope to eventually recoup development investment with game sales and
production cost reductions. Sony is still losing money on every PS3 it
sells at $399, so a price cut could push the games division back into
the red, analysts say.

"With Stringer saying, 'We will be profitable,' you can't cut price,"
says Michael Pachter, a research analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities
in Los Angeles. He expects Sony to cut prices at the start of its new
fiscal year in April, which could help boost sales.

Sony also is suffering from a lack of attractive titles that are
exclusive to the PS3. Microsoft has hit the jackpot with two action-
adventure game franchises, Halo and Gears of War, which are available
only on the Xbox 360. Most of Nintendo's top games are made in house
and playable only on the Wii.

Sony used to have a stable of exclusive games. But in recent years,
Microsoft has persuaded most game publishers to release highly
anticipated games to it and Sony at the same time.

Last month, four of the five best-selling U.S. games were exclusive to
either the Wii or Xbox 360, according to NPD. Sony's best-selling game
during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at
War from Activision Blizzard Inc. But twice as many people bought the
Xbox 360 version.

I find the new articles about how the PSP is on the brink of death
more interesting since those death knells are much more believable.
PSP software has been pretty crappy for the most part over the past
year or two and there are already talks of a drastic change to the
system sometime in 2009 (even more of a change than the Nintendo DSi).

While I don't think Sony will pull out of the console business anytime
soon, they have to be at least reconsidering this whole portable thing.

You need to go to the Shop Channel where you will find more channels
available for download. Most are free but the Internet Channel is $5.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to the Wii and am trying
to find information for my young son.

He want to play 1 vs 1 with his friend (in the same room) racing on
Mariokart, but we can't figure out how to play with just the two players
and NO other computer players. Is this possible?

We can easily set up a two player game at the moment, but this includes
all the other computer players, and this is not what we want.

Maybe it's not possible, but as a older person who is not familiar with
computer games, I'm not sure!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike.

Those of you who still have some spare cash in your wallet
at the conclusion of yet another holiday season, know that
Amazon wants it. They've put all of their gaming
accessories on sale, taking 10% off the price of certain
items [Amazon: http://atu.ca/WiiDeals ]. If you were
looking for that extra Wiimote (and aren't expecting it as
a gift), it qualifies. Or, you could just grab Wii Play
with a Wiimote, if you're into that sort of thing. The Nyko
Perfect Shot, the Zapper, WiiSpeak, and even Wii Wheels
qualify. There's a lot to check out.

I connected my Wii to my wireless LAN, upgraded the firmware, checked
out the included channels, but haven't figured out how to add new
channels, such as the Internet.

I did find a page full of blank channel buttons, but pushing those
buttons didn't do anything other than show they were pushed.

How do I add new channels?

You need to go to the Shop Channel where you will find more channels
available for download. Most are free but the Internet Channel is $5.

Hi

We just got a wii for christmas. I was disapointed that it won't play
DVD's, but it seems it's possible through the homebrew channel and some
free/legal software.

Now I'm trying to follow
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Setting_up_your_Wii_for_Homebrew
And I'm stuck at the requirement "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
that has been played at least once". Is this a regular wii game that
I'll have to buy just for the purpose of getting DVD playing to work?
Can it be bought through one of the channels or do I have to wait a few
days and go to a real store.

Sorry for all the newbie questions.

My opinions don't have typos but you do realize I said if it has to do with
ratings, right? It wasn't a commentary on either game. Let me know when

Not a resounding statement that he is confident the PS3 is ahead, he gives
no business indicators to show such a statistic. Having said that, if you
think the PS3 was undertracked, then you would have to hold the site to the
same degree as the other consoles sales. Remember, they all used shipped,
and not sold as the stat.. Having said that, I don't think that those
numbers since the middle of October are going to be off so much to favor the
360 or the Wii at this point. Here in the US, the PS3 is really taking a
nose dive as I see many consumers buying the cheaper BR players than the
PS3.

When I bought Fable II in October, I still saw Folklore selling for the same
release price and it was released a year before that.

Weren't LBP and Resistance 2 supposed to clobber Gears 2? LBP is
really good though.

No one said LBP was supposed to clobber anything except Blig. The whole
stupidity of equating sales with quality is definitely wearing thin on me
(to whoever hijacked the thread to try and bash LBP because of sales).
There was no way either of those games could "clobber" Gears 2 in sales and
everyone knew that except for trolls. But LBP is still ranked a full
percentage point higher on gamerankings. If sales = quality, the Wii is a
far superior console to the 360 even if the games are better. If ratings
matter, LBP is the GOTY. Either way, there is no way to spin this to make
MS come out smelling like roses so just accept that the Wii is kicking ass
and Nintendo has already won this generation. BTW, you don't have to use
terms like Gaystation and Xflop to be a fanboy and that is becoming more
obvious by threads like this.

[Plug in comment representing stated of bug-eyedness here]

The Wii has gone on to become a phenomenon that transcends
videogames. To know what represents videogames, look at the 360's
sales, which are very respectable.

And Sony isn't doing too bad itself, but just dwarfed.

Oh Yeah!!! My wife and I are BOTH right now "shitting bricks" over stupid game console sales reports. This tripe is so reminiscent of the Commodore 64 days (long before most of you children were illegitimately conceived) when those that preferred Mr. Nibble or Fast Hack'Em to clone "uncopyable C64 game disks" would argue endlessly and pointlessly and would figuratively "walk the plank" to defend the wrongly-perceived honor, glory, righteousness and loyalty to an inanimate object.

So as my wife and I are , at this very moment, "shitting bricks" about console sales we are also puking our guts out ...

Who gives a fuck which console sells #1, #2..but wait!!!! How about game console sales rated at #136? That's right Atari 2600 RULES!!! http://www.strategygamersworld.com/video/Atari2600.jpg You children need a cyber history lesson....

The Wii has positions 3, 4, 5 and 10. The more notable part is that
those 4 games are all first-party efforts which means Nintendo gets
all of the profit instead of just a licensing cut.

Well, if you really, really wanted to you could since there's more
than 400k more in units sold in the top 10 for Xbox 360 than there are
for Wii.

Wait, why do we care how many games get sold. I'm playing LBP and
fallout 3 right now (When I can get the wife to stop Wii Bowling or
Rockin it to Rock Band 2) and None are on the list. Who cares! The
"Better" game is purely subjective, which ever you enjoy the most is
the better one. and just cause Gears of War 47 or GTA 63 has Awsome
graphics doesnt make it better than Tetris on your cell phone if you
enjoy tetris more.

Can't we all just get along!

Physical numbers aside, the ratios seem to be in-line with previous
months' data. The Wii outsold the PS3+360 by almost 2:1.

The PS3 sells less than it did last November and the X360 sells more?
It's amazing how far Sony has fallen in just a few years. I can
remember how the PSP was going to dominate the DS and how the PS3 was
going to move 5 million units without any games.

Poor Sony, last place in both consoles and handhelds. Who would have
thunk it just a few years ago?

Its all to do with the price. Since Sony can't afford to drop the PS3's
price, it will stay last place.
Here in the UK, you can nearly buy three Xbox 360's for the cost of one PS3.

What I don't understand is, how come the PS3 has now passed the 360 by
300,000+ units in total across the PAL regions, but at its stupidly higher
price. Mind boggles!!

The figures if you look at ALL consoles are even more interesting

1. Nintendo Wii - 2.04 million units
2. Nintendo DS - 1.57 million units
3. Microsoft Xbox 360 - 836,000 units
4. Sony PSP - 421,000 units
5. Sony Playstation 3 - 378,000 units
6. Sony Playstation 2 - 206,000 units

Wow. Nintendo sold over 3.5 million consoles. It's like printing
money for them.

I wonder if PS2 sales are cannibalizing PS3 sales or maybe if PS2
sales are financing the PS3?

If Blig is a pseudonym for individuals who are the worst for fanboysm,
then a Blig did say it. It was someone else. I will say I was of the
belief that LBP had the potential to be a huge seller. However, among
those that were counting on games to turn the table, the belief was
that LBP was supposed to turn the table for the PS3. As a fan of LBP
(I want a Sackboy keychain!), it looks like LBP may be fitting into
sleeper hit title, something along the lines of what Sega had when t
was on the way out. Remembered fondly but not making a difference in
system sales.

I still maintain that Ninendo has released some sort of virus that
makes people irrationally want to buy a Wii. Why else would so many
people buy a console with so few games? Why else would they still be
in such short supply when everyone is acknowleding that they have one
that's just gathering dust?

And these numbers also make me picture a Sony where everyone just sits
around reminiscing about the glory days of the PS2, back when they
weren't in a distant who-gives-a-shit third place. Seriously, they
were the only one here that didn't sell more consoles this month than
at the same time last year.

No, what's really notable is that three of Wii titles are old games.
If it wasn't for the fact that they came with hardware, they'd be pure
profit. Nintendo earned back their development and marketting costs
long ago.

Too bad there just aren't many games on the system I'd want to play.

Where do you get your numbers? Though not totally reliable, VG Chartz shows
PAL regions having well more than 1M 360s in house over the PS3 and growing
again by leaps and bounds. Over the past month, the 360 has had doubled and
one time, tripled the weekly sales over the PS3.

And VGCharts have always undertracked the PS3.

Hi,

are australian Wii games playable in european Wii consoles? Both
countries support PAL system, but I am not quite sure if Nintendo has
some kind of regional codes build in the game disks.

Peter

Most important RPG this generation! I am nearly speechless
with the incredible prescience of the marketting people.

I'm making a note here (Huge Success!) to never purchase
a game in the future that has the words "Dragon" or "Quest"
or "X" in the title, just in case it manages to get past my
"Wii" and "Japan" filters.

Ouch, Dragon Age might actually be a good RPG you'll miss with that
rule

[Plug in comment representing stated of bug-eyedness here]

The Wii has gone on to become a phenomenon that transcends
videogames. To know what represents videogames, look at the 360's
sales, which are very respectable.

And Sony isn't doing too bad itself, but just dwarfed.

Wow, look at the software sales, 360 has the #1 and #2 position,
beating the almighty Wii.

Weren't LBP and Resistance 2 supposed to clobber Gears 2? LBP is
really good though.
